Senior second baseman Jessica Bump homered twice and sophomore first baseman Lisa Cadogan belted a grand slam, leading Binghamton (17 18, 7 3 AE) to a sweep of Hartford (7 24, 1 10 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Cadogan, meanwhile, was 2 for 5 (.400) and is the first Binghamton player to belt a grand slam since current sophomore catcher Taylor Chaffee against Maine on April 13, 2013.

The Bearcats had good scoring chances in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings but came up empty.

1 1 tie with three runs in the third inning and then added three insurance runs in the fifth frame. In the third, senior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz led off with a single and two batters later, junior left fielder Jake Thomas pulled a single through the right side. With runners on first and third, McGraw then smacked a 2 0 pitch off the wall in left field, scoring Bereszniewicz with the go ahead run. Gamache followed with a two run double off the base of the wall in left, making it 4 1.

A sacrifice fly by Bump in the bottom of the second inning pulled the Bearcats to within 6 4. The Bearcats tied the game at 6 6 with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Harbaugh had a RBI single and sophomore pinch hitter Griffin McIver drew a bases loaded walk.

Thomas had an RBI single in the bottom of the first to give BU an early 1 0 lead. It was his team high 19th run driven in this spring. Maine tied it in the third on a two out solo home run.

Harbaugh made it 8 0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the nightcap, Bump picked up where she left off, drilling a three run homer in the bottom of the first inning. It marked the second time this season that she has homered in back to back games.

Bump's two run homer in the bottom of the first inning opened the scoring in the first game. One inning later, the Bearcats erupted for five runs, capped off by Cadogan's grand slam.

Laney allowed a leadoff hit in the top of the fifth inning but retired the next three batters to raise her record to 11 5.

Junior starter Mike Urbanski (W, 3 1) limited Maine to three hits and one run over 4.0 innings. Junior reliever Greg Ostner pitched the final three scoreless innings to record his second save of the season. Urbanski was in trouble in the first inning after giving up a single and walk to start the game. But he induced back to back infield pop ups and a groundout to first to strand two. Freshman outfielder Gabby Bracchi went 3 for 7 (.429) during the doubleheader. In the process, she extended her hitting streak to 15 games, which is the longest in program history since Deannie Plemon reeled off a record 17 game hitting streak in April 2010.

McGraw went 2 for 4 with two RBI and Gamache had two RBI. Thomas went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Bereszniewicz went 2 for 3.

Meghan Wynn gave Hartford a 7 6 lead when she scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the frame, however, freshman third baseman Crysti Eichner singled home a pair of runs, giving the Bearcats an 8 7 edge.

In a pitcher's duel in the opener, the Black Bears snapped a scoreless tie in the eighth inning and went on to the 3 0 win. Maine hit a leadoff home run in the eighth and added a run scoring single. The visitors used a two out RBI single in the ninth to close out the scoring.

As a team, Binghamton hit .348 against Hartford during the doubleheader. The Black Bears (14 20, 5 6 AE) took the opener 3 0. The teams will play the rubber game of the three game series at noon on Sunday.

In the fifth, BU put runners on first and third with one out but a strikeout and then soft liner to third stranded two baserunners. In the sixth, the Bearcats came within a whisker of taking the lead. Bereszniewicz led off with a bunt single and stole second. One out later, Thomas hit a single through the right side but Bereszniewicz was thrown out by the right fielder in a close play at the plate. After Maine scored twice to take a 2 0 lead, Posavec led off the bottom of the eighth with a double. When senior Nike Air Vapormax Flyknit Sp18 second baseman Daniel Nevares drew a two out walk, BU had the tying run on first but a groundout ended the threat.

Sophomore outfielder Sydney Harbaugh hit a team best .750 (3 for 4) with a home run, drew a pair of walks and scored five times. She now leads the Bearcats with a .340 batting average for the season.
