The council's City Centre Conservation Area Grants Scheme encourages landlords and businesses to restore original architectural features on historic buildings by "match funding" what they invest.
Darley Abbey Mills North (two entries) and South (one entry). The city council, working with owners, is addressing this through its Darley Abbey Mills and Stables regeneration and grant aid project.
The front of Jack Rabbits delicatessen, in Queen Street, was refurbished as part of the city council's scheme. Owner Amelia Horne said: "People visiting the city want to see places that have been regenerated. It's really great that our city has been recognised. Our city is beautiful."
The scheme, set up in 2008, has been used to transform streets such as The Strand, Wardwick, Iron Gate and Sadler Gate.
A project which aims to restore Derby's historic city buildings and shop fronts back to their former glory has been singled out for praise. Kelly Tyler reports.

The grade one listed building is widely considered to be one of the finest Georgian townhouses outside London.

Planning applications have now been submitted for new shop fronts on the Morledge and, if approved, work is scheduled to start later this year.

It has now been removed from the Heritage At Risk Register after it was brought back into use as the Derby offices of accountancy firm Smith Cooper earlier this year. The English Heritage's report states that the building now has a "long and productive" future ahead.
Derby city centre conservation area although cited as in poor condition, it is said to be "improving". Shopfront grants, the work of the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement Nike Vapormax Khaki District (BID) and private investments are also continuing to bring improvements.
"Both the restoration of St Helen's House and the improvements to the shop fronts on streets like The Strand and The Wardwick have made a striking change to the city centre and helped attract businesses and visitors.
The council has been praised in the latest edition of English Heritage's annual Heritage at Risk report for the East Midlands.
A CITY scheme which has brought customers flocking back to Derby's traditional Victorian and Edwardian shopping streets has been recognised nationally.
It also cited the council's conservation officers for also playing a significant role in working with the owners of St Helen's House.
Anne Wright, owner of Young Ideas, in Bennetts, says the city council's grant for her shop window has had a "positive impact".
She said: "It has made a huge difference to the business. The previous shop window was weak and poor. It was a pretty dingy window area. The grant meant that the space was made viable.
Derby City Council has been hailed for its "considerable success" in preserving key city centre streets and bringing back into use major historic buildings.
David Slinger, environment manager at the city council, said: "Derby has a very rich heritage that, in some places, people had missed on ground level. Quality is important, not just for the heritage but for the individual business.
"We are absolutely thrilled that all of our hard work by our fantastic conservation officers has been recognised."
Councillor Asaf Afzal, city council cabinet member for planning, environment and public protection, said: "We're very pleased that English Heritage has noted the council's recent conservation efforts.
"That's why we're extending the City Centre Grant Scheme to the Morledge, and pledging in grant support to landlords and businesses who decide to restore the original architectural features on the shop fronts there.
Businesses in the city have also welcomed the report.
English Heritage's report states: "Considerable success is being achieved in Derby where the city council's partnership work with owners, backed by English Heritage, is revitalising entire historic streets."
