The learning curve is steep for kids who have grown up playing outdoors without the restrictions of boards, but the Edmonton Miners are hoping their quartet from Bryant University makes a quick adjustment.
The problem with starting in the NLL is it takes longer to get up to speed in that league because of the limited amount of floor time they get. The Bryant quartet is living and breathing the Miners right now.
Matthew Kristiansen is getting hot for the Eclipse once the calendar turned to June. In two games over the weekend, the third year player had five goals in two outings, including a hat trick in the 9 5 loss to the Okotoks Raiders.
"I knew we would get good athletes. It was a matter of whether they wanted to adapt to the game and the early signs is they are."
"The good thing about the kids coming up here is they are on the floor five nights a week," Johma said. "You get the opportunity to sit with them and go over things. You can really teach the game. When you have one practice in the NLL, you are focused on your opponent and then playing the next day."
head coach Dave Pym, also on the team. Curt Malawsky's oldest son is still about a decade away from making it a trifecta.
"There are a few things we chuckle about," Johma said. "The bouncing ball is a mystery to them. They love the contact. It's also funny to watch them on a fast break and come to the end of the boards. All of a sudden, that floor ends quickly and decisions they have to make aren't ones they would have to Nike Vapormax Red White make in the field game. They have to adjust to that. It's going well and they have good skills so it's been a positive.
If any of these players had designs on going into the National Lacrosse League eventually, they are getting a crash course on the indoor style. Over the past few years, when an American field player comes into the NLL, quite often they have trouble with the confined space and the amount of physical contact that is more prevalent indoors.

The Miners added Teddy Mason, JK Poirier, Mike Rauchut and Kyle Crowley for the 2011 season as they chase a spot in the Minto Cup, which will be held Aug. 20 28 in Okotoks. It's thanks to veteran Nils Thompson that the Miners were able to attract the group of sophomores.

Crowley has had the biggest offensive impact, scoring a goal and adding three assists in five games while scooping up 14 loose balls. The group needed to make some obvious changes to play in the Alberta league, but they've been willing to work at it.

colleges to play field lacrosse. Now a few Americans have come to Alberta for a taste of the box game.
"The big guys on the back end is what we've been lacking the first few weeks of the season, "said head coach Rick Windl. "Getting Andrew and Shawn back would be a big asset."
"He's a heck of a salesman," said Miners head coach AJ Johma. "They are making an impact already. They are picking up the game quickly and they are enthusiastic. That part has been really positive."
McMahon is being used exclusively as a forward since he didn't have the benefit of getting a practice in before suiting up in Edmonton.
"Right now he's at my place," said Raiders head coach Bruce Codd. "I coached him back in peewee and bantam. It seems like a good fit for now. We'll see how it goes. It's tough living with the coach I'm sure."
Kristiansen now has 20 goals in 11 games for the Eclipse, who are tied for third spot with the Miners at 4 7.
McMahon, the son of Calgary Roughnecks assistant coach Bob McMahon, scored a goal in his first game Saturday.
It was a rough weekend as the Mounties lost a pair of games in Edmonton, but there is hope on the horizon. They lost 7 5 to the Eclipse Sunday after a 10 9 defeat to the Miners the previous day.

Greg Bourret had four points Sunday in the 7 5 win over the Mounties, upping his league leading total to 43, including the top goal total of 24, tied with Raiders' Holden Cattoni.
Meanwhile, Shawn Teixeira is close to coming back from a shoulder dislocation that's become a recurring injury. Both defenders have been missed as they are the oldest and biggest players on the roster. Still, the Mounties are 6 4 after a decent start.
McMahon has been lined up with a job to make his move to Alberta a busy one.
The Mounties do expect to get a couple of key players back from injury as early as this weekend. Captain Andrew Smistad broke his wrist playing for Presbyterian College and it bothered him during one outing that he suited up for the Mounties.
